The Second Summer of the Sisterhood
by
Ann Brashares
This is the sequel to The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. The girls are a year older and summer has come so it's time to pass the pants around again. This year Bee is off to Alabama to visit her grandmother, Tibby is off to a college summer school course for aspiring film makers, and Carmen and Lena are staying at home and working summer jobs. They are all still recovering from last years adventures, but this year has some new ones to throw their way.
This is a young adult novel and as such the language isn't too tough and the vocabulary is nothing special. But the subject is life and love and the author does such a good job of touching on these subjects that I think adults can appreciate too. I enjoyed this book more than the first one because there was less focus on the "magic" pants and more focus on the girls being in control of their own fates. Also there was more wanting of sex and less having of sex than in the first book. I'm a bit old-fashioned but I generally don't think it's cool for 15 and 16 year olds to be having sex and I didn't like the fact that the first book suggested this is ok.
This was a very quick half-day read for me, but I liked it quite a bit. The third book in this series, Girls in Pants: The Third Summer of the Sisterhood is set to be released in January 2005 and I'm looking forward to reading that one, too.
