A nice addititon to the Pern series. The beginning of the saga from a different point of view. As Robinton's life story is told, you meet old friends at the beginning of their lives and career. The story that eventually evolves with Lessa becoming a weyrwoman at Benden, gets some more background. Treat it as a historical filler.
Not the best of the series, not even very essential, but a nice little extra. Again, as before with Pern novels, I can not say how much this would be enjoyed by someone that does not know the series. For those I would still recommend to start with the fist book and follow in order of publication, as the characters evolve throughout the books.
