The Last Legion
by
Valerio Massimo Manfredi
"The Nova Invicta Legion, charged with protecting the last Emperor of Rome, is attacked by the barbarians. In the space of a few hours all is lost. The Imperial family is executed and the young Emperor deposed and imprisoned. The Roman Empire lies in ruins. But not all Romans are dead. From the battlefield a band of seemingly immortal legionnaires arises. They are joined by a warrioress who emerges like a magical apparition. They are the Last Legion. Risking their lives, they attempt a desperate mission: to free the Emperor and his tutor. They guide the last Caesar in a dramatic journey of escape, which takes them through a devastated Europe and on to their ultimate destinies." (summary of the text on the back flap)
Good old-fashioned adventure yarn with an unexpected ending! The author is a professor of classical archaeology at a university in Milan and it shows.
