by Robert J. Sawyer
I mostly like this book because it is full of interesting ideas. If God exists, why do we suffer? Why did God create such a thing as cancer? Mr. Sawyer proposed possible answers to these questions as well as others. Although classified as hard sci-fi, the science provided in the story was not too complex, and anything that might've been complex came with explanations. The writing was mostly fairly simple and this was a very quick, although enjoyable, read for me. The author was careful to make a distinction between the existence of God and the validity or religion. For example, proof that God exists is not proof that there is a Heaven, that we have souls, or that the events depicted in the Bible actually happened. The main thing I didn't like about this book was the fact that although the author provided a lot of scientific detail, there were several facts he presented that I know to be untrue. This, of course, made me question the accuracy of the other details he provided. I also didn't enjoy the ending of this book. I thought it was just too much. The author attempted to answer some questions which I think would've been better left unanswered. I think this book would've been better if it had ended twenty pages sooner. But over all this was an amusing story with thought-provoking ideas and I enjoyed it very much.
