The Brethren is comprised of two subplots. The first
is about 3 imprisoned ex-judges, who concoct a scam to
blackmail wealthy closeted gay men. The
second is about a man who has been chosen by some very
powerful men in Washington to run for President of the
United States. Towards the last 1/3rd of the book the
two stories come together. I won't give it away, but
I will say that this is a fairly suspenseful book with
a lot of twists and turns.
As most always, I enjoyed John Grisham's writing. He
always manages to entice the reader into desperately
wanting to know how the story will go and provides you
with memorable characters along the way. I was
disappointed with the ending though—it lacked
excitement or any type of climax. It was pretty
predictable. Also, he could have been a bit
meaner with the editing pen, cut out a few unnecessary
characters and such. Other
than that though, I'd recommend this book for some
exciting reading.
